Blackpool 10k Beach Run - Race Report

Whilst 1,000s of people were taking to the streets of Manchester for the iconic Great Manchester 10k, 102 runners were registering at the Solaris Centre (Blackpool) for the Blackpool 10k Beach Run, with myself and Dave representing NWFPAC.

As the name implies, the run took place entirely on sand; an out and back starting at the “World’s Largest Disco Ball”, close to South Pier and in the shadow of the Big One (still a big hit with roller coaster enthusiasts), the route followed the dunes down to the pier at Lytham St Anne’s.

Before the race all of the talk was about whether the sand would be firm and “runnable” or soft and energy sapping. Stepping onto the beach we seemed to be in luck, firm sand all the way. What we had failed to predict was the head wind - the first 4.5km of the race was into a strong head wind, with runners seeking to slip-stream whenever possible. I would like to report on the sights on the way out but it was, well, largely sand with the odd dog to hurdle / dodge.

At the turn at Lytham St Anne’s (and the water station), it became clear that the run would be closer to 9km than 10km, as advertised (the joy of a race with no defined route - just down the beach as you wish). The route back was an opportunity to push on, with the strong winds now on our backs; whilst the view was still largely sand (and of course more dogs to dodge), in the distance we were now treated to some of Blackpool’s premier sights - the Pleasure Beach and the Tower. Finally, once that epic Disco Ball was back in our sights, the finishing line was not too far away.

Overall, a well organised and very different run, with a relaxed atmosphere – one I would certainly recommend for 2016.

I finished in 3rd place (36.42) and Dave in 14th (42.31). For my podium finish I was delighted to receive a medal (as all finishers did), a bottle of wine and 2 pairs of socks - what more can you ask for!

Thank you Blackpool, a nice morning rounded off with a bag of chips on the front (not included in the entry fee!).
