2017 Championship - Race 5 - Colshaw Hall 10k

The latest race was the Colshaw Hall 10km - a great location, and one with a twist - it was closest to the predicted time rather than the fastest finisher. This meant that at the start line there were late diversions away from the trees in order to pick up GPS signals for myself, Tim Shaw and Alan Budenberg whilst seasoned campaigners Dave Simmons and Steven Henderson were both ready and set to go.

This was the first NWFPAC race I've been to where nobody got their excuses in before the start too with Steven Henderson even submitting a predicted time equal to his PB.

The race started a couple of minutes late as the organisers let the queue for the toilets die down and then we were off and straight into the Cheshire countryside. If you haven't done this one before, I'd really recommend it - described as "pleasantly undulating" before hand.

As a (true) accountant I'd predicted a 47 minute 30 second finish time and divided the race up into 10x4 minute 45 second kilometres. I dutifully set off at this pace and was caught up by Dave who was aiming for 50 minutes. After a fairly conversational couple of kilometres with Dave (where we concluded at least one and possibly both of us were wrong on our timings if we were next to each other) we parted ways with Dave taking the lead.

The Cheshire countryside and Jodrell Bank made for a pleasant back drop throughout. There is one heck of a downhill section at 7km followed by the inevitable uphill at 8km but otherwise the pre-race "gently undulating" was a fair description.

First across the line was Steven with a new 10km PB of around 36 minutes and 15 seconds. Tim, Phil, Adam and Dave were also ahead of me with Dave setting his best time for over a year (albeit not one he predicted in advance). It was strangely enjoyable to finish a 10km without trying to kill myself in the final km and a short sprint finish saw me cross the line in 47minutes and 30 seconds - bang on my predicted time!

Already looking forward to next year and the course already has a PB feel to it.
